# Sales Tax Calculator

Add or strip sales tax. Pick a US state for the statutory statewide rate (California 7.25% is the highest here) — not a ZIP or combined-city engine. HST, GST and VAT as typed rates.

## Quick answer

Total = price × (1 + rate). To strip tax, divide the inclusive price — do not multiply it by the rate. California statewide is 7.25%, not your checkout total. 5 jurisdictions here have no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon.

## What does “statewide rate” actually mean?

US sales tax is state + city + district. This page will never invent a combined rate for a ZIP code. California’s statutory statewide rate is 7.25%; Texas is 6.25% (locals can add up to 2%); New York statewide is 4% (NYC combined is often quoted around 8.875% — type that yourself if that is your locality).

## When should I use the VAT calculator instead?

Use this page when you already know the percentage (a receipt, a state, a province). Use the VAT / GST calculator when you want India GST slabs, UK reduced rates, or Japan’s 8%/10% split labelled for you. Both use the same 1 + rate identity. Neither classifies goods.

## Sources & Methodology

US statewide percentages come from Tax Foundation statutory state rates (2026), stored in us-jurisdictions.ts. Selecting a state never computes combined local tax, city tax, or a ZIP lookup. VAT/GST chips are national published rates you can type yourself.
