## PEMDAS — Order of Operations

The US mnemonic for order of operations: P arentheses → E xponents → M ultiplication → D ivision → A ddition → S ubtraction. Remembered as "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally." UK students use BODMAS; Canada uses BEDMAS. All mean the same rule — multiplication and division have equal priority and are worked left to right, as are addition and subtraction.

## Number Notation

The US uses: comma as thousands separator, period as decimal point. $1,234.56. This is the opposite of most of continental Europe (Germany: 1.234,56 €). The US is one of only three countries that have not officially adopted the metric system (with Liberia and Myanmar) — though metric is used in science, medicine, and military.
