Paycheck Calculator
Enter your salary — take-home updates as you type after federal/national tax and employee deductions.
Use this for a federal/national estimate of take-home on a salary in the US, UK, Canada or Australia. Skip it if you need a payslip, state tax (California can take another ~9%), or a filing — use IRS, HMRC, CRA or ATO tools. US take-home is often 70–80% of gross after federal tax plus 7.65% FICA. UK basic-rate payers typically lose 25–32% to income tax and NI. Figures below use 2026 / 2026–27 brackets as implemented in our engine.

How is US take-home pay calculated?
US net pay is gross minus federal income tax (seven brackets, 10–37%), Social Security at 6.2% up to the wage base, Medicare at 1.45% (plus 0.9% above $200,000), and any state tax. This calculator estimates federal plus FICA only. The 2026 standard deduction is $16,100 single / $32,200 married. Texas and Florida add 0% state tax; California does not.
How is UK take-home pay calculated?
UK net pay is gross minus income tax and National Insurance. The personal allowance is £12,570. Basic rate is 20% up to £50,270, then 40% to £125,140. NI is 8% between £12,570 and £50,270 and 2% above (2026/27). Student-loan deductions and pension salary-sacrifice are not in this estimate — open the UK take-home page if those apply.
How do Canada and Australia differ from the US and UK?
Canada subtracts federal tax, provincial tax, CPP (5.95%) and EI (1.63%). Australia subtracts income tax (tax-free threshold AUD 18,200) and a 2% Medicare levy; employees do not pay a social-security contribution from take-home — employers pay super on top (12% Superannuation Guarantee for 2026–27). That is why an Australian “percent kept” can look similar to the US while retirement saving sits outside the paycheck.
Who should skip this paycheck calculator?
Skip it if you are self-employed (use the self-employment tax calculator), if you need a state-specific US withholding, or if you are comparing a job offer that includes 401(k), pension, or health premiums — those change taxable pay. Use IRS Publication 15-T, HMRC’s official calculator, CRA, or ATO for filings. This page is the country-contrast layer, not a substitute for a payroll department.
United States
The US uses a progressive federal tax system with 7 brackets (10%–37%). But you also pay FICA taxes:
- • Social Security: 6.2% (up to $184,500 wage base)
- • Medicare: 1.45% (+ 0.9% on income > $200K)
- • State tax: 0% (WA, TX, FL…) to 13.3% (CA)
- • Standard deduction: $16,100 single / $32,200 married (2026)
United Kingdom
UK workers pay income tax AND National Insurance (NI) — two separate deductions:
- • Personal Allowance: £12,570 tax-free
- • Basic Rate: 20% on £12,571–£50,270
- • Higher Rate: 40% on £50,271–£125,140
- • NI: 8% (£12,570–£50,270), 2% above

⚠️ Important Notes
- • This calculator estimates federal/national taxes only. US state income taxes (0–13.3%) are not included.
- • 401(k), pension contributions, health insurance premiums, and local taxes will further reduce take-home pay.
- • Results are estimates. Use official HMRC, IRS, or CRA tools for precise figures.
Key takeaways
- US $75,000 single: about $61,593 after federal tax and FICA (17.9% effective). State tax is extra.
- UK £50,000: about £39,520 after income tax and National Insurance.
- Australia’s Superannuation Guarantee is paid on top of salary, so “percent kept” is not comparable to US FICA without that extra.
- This page is the country-contrast layer. Filings still belong on IRS, HMRC, CRA, or ATO tools.
