Income Tax Calculator

Estimate income tax and employee social contributions, then compare the same numeric salary across six systems. Sort by take-home pay, effective rate, or tax freedom day. Your marginal rate is the last dollar; your effective rate is what you actually pay.

In short

Use this if you want a federal/national estimate of tax plus employee social contributions in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, or India. Skip it if you need a filing, a payslip, US state tax, or Canadian provincial tax. On $75,000 US single (2026) this engine shows about $61,593 take-home (17.9% effective including FICA). The same number in pounds, dollars, euros or rupees is local currency — not FX.

What is this income tax calculator?

It is a browser-side estimator of statutory income tax plus employee social contributions using published 2026 / 2026/27 / 2026–27 rates. It answers “what is left after the national layer?” — not “what will my accountant file?” That is the same job as a field briefing: the number you can act on tonight, with the caveats written next to it.

Use it to compare an offer, sanity-check a payslip, or see why a UK letter and a US letter quoting the same numeral are not the same take-home. Do not use it for estimated payments, self-assessment, or state/provincial returns. Those need IRS Publication 15-T, HMRC, CRA, ATO, BZSt, or the Income Tax Department — linked in Sources.

What does $75,000 look like after tax?

The same numeral in six local currencies — not converted. US figures are single filing, federal + FICA. Canada is federal + CPP + EI. Germany is Steuerklasse I, childless.

India ₹75,000 is a low annual CTC in that system — open the dedicated India calculator for lakh-scale salaries and old vs new regime. Super in Australia is on top of A$ take-home, not inside it.

How do you calculate income tax?

  1. Start with annual gross — contract pay before deductions. Convert monthly or weekly figures first.
  2. Subtract the tax-free amount — US standard deduction, UK personal allowance, Canada BPA, Australia tax-free threshold, German Grundfreibetrag, India standard deduction (new regime).
  3. Apply each bracket only to the slice inside it. A 37% top rate does not mean 37% of all income.
  4. Add employee social contributions where they exist (FICA, NI, CPP/EI, Medicare levy, German SV).
  5. Effective rate = that total ÷ gross. Monthly net = annual net ÷ 12.

How does income tax work in each country?

How is US federal income tax calculated?

Tax applies to income above the 2026 standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly). States add 0% (Texas, Florida, Washington) up to 13.3% (California). Employee FICA is 6.2% Social Security up to $184,500 plus 1.45% Medicare (extra 0.9% above $200,000). This page does not model state tax, 401(k), or health premiums — use the paycheck calculator for pay-period views and the US paycheck page for a US-first layout.

How is UK income tax and National Insurance calculated?

England, Wales and Northern Ireland (2026/27): £12,570 personal allowance (tapered £1 per £2 above £100,000), then 20% / 40% / 45%. NI is a second tax: 8% then 2%. Scotland uses different bands and is not modelled. Student loans and salary-sacrifice pensions are excluded — see the UK take-home calculator.

How much income tax do you pay in Canada?

Federal tax (2026) plus provincial/territorial tax. Combined marginal rates in Ontario or Quebec can exceed 50% at the top. The basic personal amount is CA$16,452. This estimator includes employee CPP and EI and excludes provincial tax — add roughly 5–25% depending on province. Country hub: Canada calculators.

What is the Australian income tax rate?

Resident rates for 2026–27 include a tax-free threshold of A$18,200 and a 2% Medicare levy for most taxpayers above the low-income threshold. Employer superannuation (12%) is paid on top of salary and is not taken from take-home in this tool. See Australia calculators.

How does German Einkommensteuer work?

Progressive formula tax after the Grundfreibetrag (12.348 EUR in 2026 (Veranlagungszeitraum)), plus employee pension, unemployment, health and care insurance. Modelled as Steuerklasse I, childless. Church tax (Kirchensteuer) is excluded. German-language BMI and other tools live under Germany pages.

How is India new-regime income tax calculated?

FY 2026-27 (AY 2027-28) new regime: salaried standard deduction, slab rates, Section 87A rebate, marginal relief, and 4% health and education cess. Old-regime 80C/HRA is not modelled here. For old vs new and lakh-scale CTC use the India income tax calculator.

How do US, UK and Canada tax systems differ?

Progressive brackets everywhere; the free slice, social layer, and local add-on are what change.

What is tax freedom day?

If your combined effective rate is e, tax freedom day is day number round(e × 365) of the year. At 17.9% on the US $75,000 example, that is early March. Think-tanks publish national averages using different tax baskets (VAT, corporate tax). Ours is only the employee income-tax-plus-social rate this engine computes — comparable across the six countries on the same numeral, not a cost-of-living score.

Key takeaways

  • Effective rate is always lower than marginal rate in a progressive system. US combined federal + FICA on $75,000 single is about 17.9%.
  • The same numeral is local-currency gross. It is not an exchange-rate conversion and not a purchasing-power ranking.
  • Employee FICA, NI, CPP/EI, Medicare levy, and German SV are included. US state tax and Canadian provincial tax are not.
  • India new-regime figures at modest rupee amounts are not a substitute for the dedicated India old-vs-new calculator.
  • Estimates run in your browser. Filing still belongs on IRS, HMRC, CRA, ATO, BZSt, or the Income Tax Department.

FAQ

Income tax questions, answered straight

What is the US federal income tax rate in 2026?
The US uses seven progressive federal brackets: 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, and 37%. With a $16,100 standard deduction (2026, single), taxable income on a $60,000 salary is $43,900. Federal income tax on that salary is about $5,020; FICA is extra. This page estimates federal tax plus employee FICA, not state tax.
How is UK income tax calculated?
UK income tax (2026/27): 0% on the first £12,570 personal allowance, 20% basic rate, 40% higher rate, 45% additional rate above £125,140. National Insurance is separate: 8% between £12,570 and £50,270, then 2% above. On £75,000 this estimator shows £17,432 income tax + £3,511 NI, take-home £54,057.
What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?
Marginal rate is the tax on your last unit of income — for example 22% if you sit in the US 22% bracket. Effective rate is total tax and employee social contributions divided by gross income. Effective is always lower than marginal in a progressive system because earlier slices were taxed less. On $75,000 US single, this tool’s combined effective rate (federal + FICA) is about 17.9%.
How much income tax do you pay in Canada?
Canada federal rates (2026): 14% then 20.5%, 26%, 29%, and 33%. The basic personal amount of CA$16,452 reduces tax at the lowest rate. This calculator adds employee CPP (5.95%) and EI (1.63%) and does not add provincial tax (which requires a separate provincial calculation). On CA$75,000 federal + CPP + EI take-home is about CA$60,379.
How does income tax work in Germany?
Germany uses a formula tax from 14% to 45% after the Grundfreibetrag of 12.348 EUR (2026 (Veranlagungszeitraum)). This tool models Steuerklasse I without children, plus employee social contributions. Church tax is excluded. On €75,000 estimated take-home is €45,164 (39.8% effective including SV).
What is the income tax rate in Australia?
Australian resident rates (2026–27): 0% to A$18,200, then 15%, 30%, 37%, 45%. This estimate includes LITO and the single non-pensioner Medicare levy phase-in, up to 2%. Deductions, HELP and the Medicare surcharge are excluded. Employer super (12%) is paid on top of salary and is not deducted from take-home here. On A$75,000, estimated take-home is A$60,480.
Does this calculator include Social Security / National Insurance?
Yes, on the employee side where it applies: US FICA (Social Security + Medicare), UK National Insurance, Canada CPP and EI, Australia Medicare levy, and German Sozialabgaben. India new-regime tax includes cess, not a separate employee social-security levy. State, provincial, and local income taxes are excluded unless a page says otherwise.
What is tax freedom day?
Tax freedom day is the calendar date when you have earned enough, from 1 January, to cover that year’s estimated income tax plus employee social contributions at the effective rate this tool computes. At a 17.9% effective rate it falls around 6 March. It is an illustration, not a statutory date.
Can I compare the same salary across countries?
Yes. Add US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, and India, then sort by take-home, effective rate, or earliest freedom day. The figure is the same numeric amount in each local currency — not an FX conversion. For prices use the currency converter; for purchasing power over time use the inflation calculator.
Is any of my income sent to a server?
No. The estimate runs in your browser. There is no account and no income log. Use official IRS, HMRC, CRA, ATO, BZSt, or Income Tax Department tools if you are filing.
