How do you add or strip VAT?

  1. Add: gross = net × (1 + r). Tax = gross − net.
  2. Strip: net = gross ÷ (1 + r). Tax = gross − net. Do not multiply the inclusive price by the rate — that overstates tax.
  3. Businesses reclaim input VAT/GST on purchases in VAT countries. US sales tax is usually not reclaimable that way.

Key takeaways

  • Gross = net × (1 + r). To strip tax, divide the inclusive price — do not multiply it by the rate.
  • India 18% GST on ₹1,000 is ₹1,180 inclusive. UK 20% VAT on £100 is £120.
  • VAT is multi-stage and usually reclaimable by businesses. US sales tax is a retail tax with no federal rate.
  • Choosing a US state fills the statewide statutory rate only. Combined local tax is yours to type.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What are India’s GST rates?
India GST uses four main slabs: 5% (many essentials and economy hotels), 12% (processed food, some IT), 18% (the standard rate for most goods and services), and 28% (cars, tobacco, many luxury goods). Fresh produce, healthcare and education are often 0% / exempt. This calculator applies the slab you pick — it does not classify your SKU.
How do I add or strip 18% GST?
Add: inclusive price = net × 1.18. Example: ₹1,000 → ₹1,180. Strip: net = inclusive ÷ 1.18. Example: ₹1,180 → ₹1,000, GST ₹180. The same 1 + rate/100 identity works for UK 20% VAT (÷ 1.20) and Australian 10% GST (÷ 1.10).
What is the UK VAT rate?
Standard rate 20% on most goods and services. Reduced 5% (for example domestic energy). Zero-rated items include most food, children’s clothing, books and prescription medicines. The UK kept VAT after Brexit; EU VAT rules no longer apply to UK domestic sales.
What is the difference between VAT and US sales tax?
VAT/GST is charged (and usually reclaimed by businesses) at each stage of the supply chain. US sales tax is charged once, at retail, and is set by states and cities — there is no federal VAT. This tool will not invent a 50-state checkout engine. Pick a US state to see the statutory statewide rate, then type your combined local rate if you know it.
Does Japan have VAT or GST?
Japan has a consumption tax (消費税). Standard rate 10% (from October 2019). Reduced 8% for most food for home consumption and newspaper subscriptions. Eating out is generally the 10% rate.
