What does “statewide rate” actually mean?
US sales tax is state + city + district. This page will never invent a combined rate for a ZIP code. California’s statutory statewide rate is 7.25%; Texas is 6.25% (locals can add up to 2%); New York statewide is 4% (NYC combined is often quoted around 8.875% — type that yourself if that is your locality).
| Place | What this tool fills | What it does not |
|---|---|---|
| California | 7.25% statewide | District tax to ~8.5–10.75% combined |
| Texas | 6.25% statewide | Local add-ons up to 2% |
| New York | 4% statewide | NYC / county combined rates |
| Oregon, Montana, NH, Delaware | 0% statewide | Alaska borough tax if you live in one |
| Ontario HST | Type 13% | A CRA filing |
| UK VAT | Type 20% | Which SKUs are reduced or zero-rated |
When should I use the VAT calculator instead?
Use this page when you already know the percentage (a receipt, a state, a province). Use the VAT / GST calculator when you want India GST slabs, UK reduced rates, or Japan’s 8%/10% split labelled for you. Both use the same 1 + rate identity. Neither classifies goods.
